New Delhi, November 14, 2023: Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi, veteran hotelier and Chairman Emeritus of the Oberoi Group, passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 93. He was known for his dedication to excellence and his commitment to providing exceptional hospitality to his guests.
Oberoi was born in 1929 and joined the family business, the Oberoi Group, in 1956. He quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed Executive Chairman in 2002. Under his leadership, the Oberoi Group expanded its global reach and became one of the most respected hospitality chains in the world.
Oberoi was also a passionate advocate for the Indian hospitality industry. He served as President of the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) and the Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC). He was also a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade and Industry.
In recognition of his contributions to the hospitality industry, Oberoi was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian honor in India, in 2008. He was also named “Hotelier of the World” by Hotels magazine in 2010.
Oberoi is survived by his son, Vikram Oberoi, who is the CEO and Managing Director of EIH Limited, the flagship of the Oberoi Group, and two daughters.
His death is a major loss to the Indian hospitality industry and to the country as a whole. He was a true legend and an inspiration to many.
